In India, there are several legislations and schemes aimed at addressing the needs and concerns of senior citizens. These laws and initiatives are designed to ensure the well-being, financial security, and social inclusion of the elderly population. Some of the key legislations and schemes related to senior citizens in India include:
Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007: This Act provides legal provisions for the maintenance and welfare of parents and senior citizens. It allows senior citizens to claim maintenance from their adult children or relatives if they are unable to support themselves. It also establishes old age homes and provides protection of life and property for senior citizens.
National Program for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE): This program was launched in 2010 to address the healthcare needs of the elderly. It focuses on providing accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare services to senior citizens, including preventive and curative health services.
Integrated Program for Older Persons (IPOP): IPOP is a centrally sponsored scheme aimed at improving the quality of life of senior citizens. It includes various services such as maintenance of old age homes, day care centers, mobile medicare units, and more.
Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana (PMVVY): This is a pension scheme for senior citizens that provides them with a regular source of income. It offers a guaranteed return and is administered by the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).
Senior Citizens’ Savings Scheme (SCSS): The SCSS is a government-sponsored savings scheme for senior citizens. It offers an attractive interest rate and provides financial security to seniors.
Concessions for Senior Citizens in Railways: Indian Railways provides concessions in passenger fares to senior citizens aged 60 and above. These concessions make train travel more affordable for senior citizens.
